Why Apprenticeship Training Frameworks Matter More Than Ever

We’ve been hearing a lot lately about apprentices falling behind. It’s rarely because they don’t have the drive or the talent. More often, it’s because they’re caught between college work on one side and the realities of the workplace on the other, with no clear bridge between the two. That’s where a tailored apprenticeship training framework can make all the difference.


At Future Force, we believe an apprenticeship should be more than just a job with some extra study hours attached. We work with each business to design a bespoke framework that threads together the apprentice’s college learning with their day-to-day tasks on site. That means if they’ve learned a new skill in the classroom on Tuesday, they’re putting it into practice at work on Wednesday. It’s a joined up approach that keeps them engaged, ensures their learning is relevant, and stops that frustrating feeling of “Why am I learning this?” from creeping in.


The need for this kind of structure is clear when you look at the numbers. Across England, nearly half of apprentices drop out before completing their programme, according to multiple studies. In certain industries, such as construction, the dropout rate hovers around 47%. These are sobering statistics, not just for the apprentices whose careers stall before they’ve started, but also for the businesses who’ve invested time, money, and energy into their training. While national achievement rates have recently improved to 60.5% and dropout rates have fallen to 38.1%, there’s still a long way to go to make sure more apprentices cross the finish line.

The reasons behind those dropouts are often surprisingly simple, lack of employer support, poor coordination between the workplace and the training provider, workloads that feel overwhelming, or training that doesn’t quite click with the reality of the job. Our frameworks are built to tackle all of that head on. We make sure the learning journey is clear, expectations are realistic, and communication between you, the apprentice, and the college is constant. And here’s the best bit: you don’t have to figure all of that out yourself. We can do it for you. We’ll work alongside you to design and manage the framework so you know your apprentices are supported, challenged in the right way, and continually putting their new skills into action.
